Short-term fixed mortgage rates raised

0 Comments | Dominion Post; Wellington, New Zealand, Nov 19, 2009 | by VAN DEN BERGH Roeland

BANKS are raising short-term fixed mortgage rates, indicating the time for cheap loans has come to an end.

ANZ raised its fixed rates yesterday for six-month, one-year and two- year terms by about 25 basis points to 5.99 per cent, 6.2 per cent and 7.25 per cent respectively. ASB Bank made an unannounced hike last week. Its one-year fixed rate of 6.25 per cent is now the highest.

Economists are generally advising home owners taking out a new loan or rolling off a fixed-term mortgage to fix for a short period or the cheaper floating rate.

ASB and National Bank have the cheapest floating rates at 5.75 per cent, while ANZ is the dearest on 6.45 per cent.

Bank of New Zealand chief economist Tony Alexander expects the floating rate to rise by about 3 percentage points by the end of 2011

(The measuring volumes can be made up of anything from a small tin to a large bucket, depending on the quantity you may need) Mix thoroughly and temper it like moulding sand with a water glass mix of 50% water glass & 50% water. Water glass is the old name given for sodium silicate.

The final grog and fireclay mix should have about 6% moisture, it should easily form into a ball in your hands, if it’s crumbly, it is too dry, and you may need to add more water. But watch carefully as you don’t want to let it become like mud. Finally put your mix under plastic, and let it sweat & age for about 72 hours, or about three days.

He plunged 50ft from a walkway at about 6am. A fellow holidaymaker raised the alarm.

Booth holds nerve to win fourth-round spot

0 Comments | Sentinel, The; Stoke-on-Trent (UK), Jul 17, 2010

STOKE-on-Trent bowler Barry Booth has reached the fourth round of the Pounds 7,410 Waterloo World Championship in Blackpool.

Booth, who is the away team county captain and plays his club bowls at Birches Head Hotel, beat Doncaster’s Mick O’Brien 21-14 and Lancashire bowler John Hanson 21-17 in his second and third-round matches.

He will return to the Waterloo Hotel on September 11 when he will feature in the last 64 of a 103-year-old competition never won by a Potteries bowler.

Two other local players made second-round exits in Blackpool.

Roy Price (Milton Recs) was edged out 21-18 by David Twigg of Warrington, while Steve Howe (Westlands) lost 21-14 to Sale’s Dave Jenkinson.

Finals day, for the last eight bowlers, takes place on Wednesday, September 15.

STAFFS county player Margaret Harrison made it to the quarter- finals of the Pounds 500 George Pritchatt Memorial Classic at Chadsmoor Bowling Club.

The winner was Katrina Earl, who defeated her South Yorkshire county team-mate Debbie Farmer 21-5 to win the Pounds 200 first prize.

Quarter-finals: D Farmer 21, S Pugh 10; M Herbert 21, M Harrison 13; K Earl 21, M Barnes 8; C Davies 21, K Martin 9. Semi-finals: Farmer 21, Herbert 11; Earl 21, Davies 15. Final: Earl 21, Farmer 5. IT was a night to remember for Potteries teenager Dan Ferris when he claimed a place in the final day of the Smithy Manor Open in St Helens by beating his uncle, Dean Ferris, 21-11 duringqualifying.

Middleport’s Chris Jenkins came off the same green at 10.45pm – the latest ever finish at the venue. Unfortunately, he was a 21-18 third-round loser to Steve Davies.

Jenkins will hope for a better outcome when he plays Wigan’s Stuart Mort in today’s Gardeners Arms final 16 at Thornton Cleveleys.

THE quarter-finals of the Potteries James Birks Senior Challenge Cup will be played on Tuesday (6.30pm).

Draw: Meir Social A v Birches Head Hotel A at Milton Hayes; Birches Head Hotel B v Creda at Fenton Private; Congleton Park v Bucknall Private A at Birches Head Gardeners; Middleport Park A v Florence B at Creda.

THE County junior team brought their main season to an end with an encouraging win over Cumbria . However, it was not enough to see them qualify for the knockout stages of the competition.

Josh Towey captained them to a 219-172 home leg success at Knypersley BC, while Danny Ferris was at the helm for the 200-222 away leg defeat in Barrow.

IT’S full house for this year’s Florence Private open singles tournament, but entries are still being accepted for the club’s open pairs competition and the Vera Pegg Memorial one-day singles event. For more details, call John Large on (01782) 325510.

The opening night’s play in the open singles produced a shock result with defending champion Peter Hulse Jr going out in the second round. Results: N Tideswell 21, I Simpson 15; P Hulse Sr 21, L Peart 17; L Brown 21, D Higginson 15; C Podmore 21, P Hulse Jr 16.

Tomorrow’s second qualifying session competitors: M Melvin, J Melvin, C Kearns, P Phillips, I Howell, R Price, A France, M Norcup, K Simpson, R Price, A France, A Ferris, Dan Ferris, S Howe, C Jenkins, D Beardmore, J Watson. HOME club bowler Mick Weaver beat Middleport’s Mark Lawton 31-26 to win the Pounds 1,120 Milton Hayes Open. LEEK’S Joe Watson-Lazowski beat home player Daniel Mountford 21-11 to win the annual junior competition at Knypersley Sports.

Last Eight results: Daniel Mountford 21, Matt Packett 5; Danny Ferris 19, Ashley Knight 21; Kyle McIntyre 21, Dan Thorley 9; Joe Watson-Lazowski 21, Adam Stubbs 16. Semi-finals: Mountford 21, Knight 13; Watson-Lazowski 21, McIntyre 20. Final: Watson-Lazowski 21, Mountford 11. THE North Staffs Parks teams have three British Parks County matches tomorrow.

Going Green? There is a lot to do! by TG Holt
in Health / Wellness (submitted 2010-02-05)

Going Green? There is a lot to do!
Going green doesn’t have to mean that you believe or do not believe in global warming. It simply means that you have the want to reduce the waste you produce, save some money, stop using toxic chemicals, and generally conserve our resources. This long list is intimidating! We all want to go green but who can pull all of this off at once? All of a sudden, out of the blue?
Or what you can at least because we all are not capable of completely pulling this off. We all put it off saying maybe one day it will be accessible for me and my lifestyle. It is responsible, but also a sacrifice. We have come accustom to not thinking about our product choices. A lot of the going green movement has been so popular in areas the prices for the products are inflated even over the already high prices. High prices across the board in this genre of green, organic, or natural really cost us more anyway because less of it produced at one time. The proverbial catch 22. If everyone would switch then it would drive prices down. I personally do what I can, I use energy star products, changed out the light bulbs, and recycle. We also use all natural cleaning products like miracle ii soaps from Tedco. They sell a multi-purpose soap that really can clean you, the dishes, and everything. This is an example of finding a product that is not a sacrifice. Another example is coffee. Coffee just posses a better quality the more natural it is. So I think that possibly starting that way is a great way to introduce your family, you, or your house to “going green”. Start with the light bulbs, then only replace appliances with efficient ones. Don’t just run out a replace everything or try to save up for that pie in the sky. Step-by-step if you take one thing at a time you will find before long you are the greenest on the block.

Women on top in battle of the sexes

0 Comments | Western Daily Press, Jul 26, 2010 | by Eleanor Mcgillie

I love newspapers and don’t understand why some people choose not to read them.

I have to say though, I do laugh at some of the stories published. More and more frequently I have noticed an increase in the number of articles published on the battle of the sexes.

This week I have read articles on how women are most desperate when they are 37, how men feel most agitated when their other half gets behind the wheel and how men become more handsome as they get older whereas women are made to feel more vulnerable.

Now, in all seriousness, what is it all about? One bit of research though which did interest me was that almost one third of women in the workplace are earning more than their partners, putting them increasingly in the role of breadwinner.

According to the Women and Work Survey 2010 commissioned by Grazia magazine, almost half the 2,000 females who were questioned were out-earning their partners and 19 per cent were earning as much. Also, one in ten already had a house husband.

Now, a couple of weeks ago I wrote about Generation Y women – the 20-somethings who are content to give up financial independence and stay at home to look after children. This provoked a lot of reaction from women reading this column. Some argued that Generation Y women were taking the easy way out by not juggling home, work and children, while others said they were stay-at-home mums and wouldn’t have had it any other way.

I discussed this with a lot of my male professional friends and the majority of them said that they wouldn’t mind being house husbands.

So, how come there is such a massive shift in roles? One possible explanation given by the poll was that the recession has hit male employment, shifting the burden of responsibility in relationships.

It seems society is undergoing a huge social shift

They seem to use that as an excuse to not be
informed and “trust” their children to do what is right in
an environment that is clearly risky. When it comes to
underage children being online, there should be a set of
household rules that are in place and followed or no online
connections are allowed.

Parenting:

n: The rearing of a child or children, especially the care,
love, and guidance given by a parent. One who begets, gives
birth to, or nurtures and raises a child.

Nothing there about “except when they are online.” ;-) Here
are my suggestions for technochallenged parental units:

1. Keep your computer in an open place such as the family
room or rec room. No negotiation here! Online activities are
only allowed in this public area – when you are home. Allow
a computer connected to the Internet behind a teenager’s
closed bedroom door and you are asking for trouble!

2. Keep your computer and online connection password
protected. Use passwords that cannot be guessed by ingenious
teenagers.
